The Light in You

Relaxing woman, drawing on paper

The light in you shows the light in me
There is a better way,
A kinder way,
A way that honors the good of all

If I can only see you as your light,
As the love incarnate that you are,
If I can only see your beauty beneath the tears

If I can open past the often hateful exterior
To find the divinity inside,
The oneness with the light that makes you,
And also makes me,
Whole

If I can only see you,
See me,
See the light in all of us
Crying to shine out

Burning through all that conceals it
Trying to reveal it
Love and light incarnate
In all bodies of the One

Refugee

Silhouette Despair refugee woman

All souls are refugees
Seeking a greater life, a higher purpose,
Lost in the wanderings
Of their own internal wars

Who dares love them?
Who dares turn them away?

Our hardened hearts
Can’t see their exiled souls
Our brothers and sisters of the light
We see only fear and turn away,
Unwilling or unable to accept
The refugee of our own being

What if God is in their skin?
What if God is in the terror?
Maybe divinity is found not in walls
Or even prayers,
But in the fear that we admonish,
The shame we drive away like a mirror

What if God is in all the places and people
We find uncomfortable or unworthy
In the vast fearful parts of our hearts
Where we shut out the light?

And if that’s where our true divinity lies,
Then how will we ever see the truth?
And will we forever slam the door
On the refugee soul?

All As One

whale

All creatures great and small,
They all are worthy,
As we are worthy too

Worthy of the kingdom we all left
Not too many years before,
Worthy of the light that shines from within

Worthy to be held and loved,
To be honored as a being
Of thought and feeling

All creatures deserve our loving-kindness,
The stardust and divinity that holds us together
Binds them together too

All as one,
In the kingdom
In the light

Love’s Intention

A stained glass window: Adam and Eve and the snake in paradise.

I am pure Light
and so you are
together we share our vision
make the world into a new
heaven on earth
usher in a peace
that darkness hid
since the first man and woman
met the apple
and the snake
cast away their innocence
and with it, their god
consumed all the darkness
so that future generations
should seek the light
forgetting our divinity
fighting only for individuality
negating our place in the kingdom
where Love intended
us to be

Divinity Entombed

Entrance to Sousse catacombs flooded with light

In the morning you look like every other
sinner, makeup smeared, hair unkempt,
heart heavy with the bloody dawn of forgiveness

For last you went to Sunday School
the preacher warned, “Remember,
everyone’s a sinner”, even 10-year-old
girls with pigtails and lofty dreams,

and you swallowed hard again the accusation
cloaked in kindness, accepting the wafer with a
clutching sense of panic that hell
might befall you if you do partake, and
most especially if you don’t

Heaven became a destination,
a sought-after paradise unobtainable
amidst your sureness that there is no
eternal story, your suspicion that even you
might not be real

And in this darkness welled a great sorrow,
a longing which cried to fling itself to freedom,
in this solitude laid a song, mimicking
the mournful wail of birds at dawn

Beneath skin stretched translucent,
intertwined with bone and sinew,
muscles, fat, and pulsing organs
deep within the essence of you, lies the
realness that you seek, the ghostly ghastly
spirit soul, your divinity entombed

Go now, and wrestle free from your human skin,
allow the light of your eternal being to permeate
the darkness of your soul
