The Angels remind us that things are not always as they seem and it often takes patience to arrive at the truth. In the meantime, we can cultivate trust in our inner guidance to lead us where we need to be.
Time stands still
And in the void an otherworldly voice
Begins to whisper from some unknown depths within,
And though her language is unknown
The heart still understands
And begins to whisper too
Softly at first, then growing louder
Until the voice becomes a roar
For all ears to receive
It is not by the color of our skin
Or the hairs on our heads,
The sound of the voice in our throats
The pew in which we sit,
Or the love we hold in our hearts for another
That we are persecuted so,
No, it is the brokenness,
A carried-down, ancestral aching,
Fierce clinging to ancient, entrenched philosophies
Hunger misguided by survival for the fittest
Which tortures and feeds our collective broken heart
The weeping dagger still twisting
In the open wound
Never bearing the opportunity
To experience the light of healing
Those who hold the power to turn the knife
And keep the wound always fresh and weeping
Believe they also hold the key to our survival
Yet they are wrong,
They mask a heart-known truth
We also hold the handle to the knife
And turn its blade deep into our own flesh
Each time we choose hate or indifference over love
Each time we choose personal safety over protection for another
Each time we choose blindness rather than to witness painful truth
Each time we choose, repeatedly, not to remove the knife
From our own bleeding hearts
So when we choose to fight the knife-bearers
Without removing our own knives
We also then choose
To fight ourselves
This truth, it lies inside each one of us
To heal the world
To heal ourselves
We must speak it now
We must live it now
Meditation has a secret.
It doesn’t work for everyone (GASP!).
Of course, this isn’t what we’re told about this powerful, ancient practice. The list of amazing meditation benefits for mind, body, and spirit are practically endless (and easy to Google). Need to get more grounded and focused? Stressed out? Experiencing pain? Want to connect to your inner guidance? Meditation is the cure for all your ills.
But if you ask the average person, they’ll tell you (likely in great detail) the TRUTH about meditation; how they can’t sit still or quiet their mind, they can’t fit it into their day, or they tried it and didn’t like it or didn’t get any effect.
It could even be said that meditation benefits all people, but not all people benefit from meditation.
The true dirty secret of meditation involves the pressure we feel to always be doing something, and to do it as a means to an end, which creates for us a meditation practice that is more like a checklist than personal development. In turn, this can lead to some pretty undesirable outcomes.
The Angels remind us that when we feel overwhelmed by the energy of the world, we always have access to the energy inside. It never leaves us, we only have to learn how to access it through our inner guidance.

Something is going on with me and the animal kingdom lately. In the past week, I’ve crossed a stray cat that looked like a little fluffy lion, a wild tom turkey pursuing two females with his body puffed up and tail feathers completely spread, a large black snake which played dead despite my efforts to make it move from my path, rescued not one but TWO frogs from certain death in a parking lot and a neighborhood street, and encountered a huge snapping turtle right on the sidewalk in my neighborhood. Then a wolf appeared to me during meditation.
Nature is literally coming at me from EVERY angle!
Now, everyone around me is asking, “What’s up?! Are you an animal whisperer?” It’s true that I’ve always had a strong connection with animals. This is nothing new. And that hasn’t dimmed with age. In fact, it’s only become magnified, especially with having children who also have a fierce heart for animals and their welfare (just last night my daughter sent me a link from the Humane Society to donate in support of stopping puppy mills).
I’ve also recently taken two animal communication classes and belong to an AC group online. I’ve even had some success giving messages in the online community. But I haven’t done much with it since before Christmas, at least in part because I’ve been energetically overwhelmed (I’m a chronic over-scheduler), and I’ve been trying to give myself a rest. I’ve also been putting more focus into the future of A Spirit Led Life, especially around my goals of writing more, publishing more, launching the Awakening Angels Circle, and reaching more people. It doesn’t leave much time for work with animals, virtually or in person.
Yet, in my experience, when it’s time to put more focus on another area, Spirit lets me know. Like running across a cat, a snake, three wild turkeys, two frogs, a turtle, and a meditation wolf, all in a matter of days!
But still, what does it all MEAN?
While I do generally look for subtle messages and meaning in most everything around me, I also realize that not everything means something. Some events are just events. However, when I get this much coming at me at once, and all around the same basic theme, I can’t help but wonder what significance it might hold for me.
My question is a familiar struggle for many who are making their way through the spiritual jungle, so to speak. We’re often given the impression that if we’re really in touch with our inner guidance that it will be clear and obvious to us when messages come and what they mean. For some people this might be true some of the time, but I feel safe saying that even the most skilled and connected person feels unclear from time to time. And a lot of us feel unclear most of the time, which can be frustrating.
If you’re like me and are terribly impatient with the process and easily distracted by not knowing the answers RIGHT NOW, it’s especially frustrating.
Clearly, this is an area where I STILL struggle. As a result, I usually follow a predictable pattern:
- I get totally overwhelmed because I don’t know what anything means.I switch directions, spend all my time thinking about what it might mean, and end up in a funk when I can’t figure it out.If you’re one who tries to tackle everything with your head instead of your heart (like me), then it’s a strong wake-up call to slow down, because too much of this can seriously cloud our intuition.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD: Do some mediation, stat. We have to make ourselves take some down time. The more we feel resistance (you know that voice that says, “You’ll never get this done if you don’t stay up until midnight every night slaving away until it’s perfect.”), the more we need a break. Recognize that thinking all the time only wears out our minds and, in the end, we’re still not sure our answers are correct because our hearts haven’t had a chance to give their stamp of approval. We have to trust that what needs to get done will be and allow ourselves to let something go. We can always come back to it later if necessary. The reward is more calm, which leads to greater clarity.
2. I look for someone to talk me down from the ledge. I reach out to my energy worker and intuitive friends and my husband and anyone else who I think might be helpful, asking them to clear my energy, give me insights, or just plain tell me what to do.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD: Trust our inner guidance. It takes more strength to be honest with ourselves and be willing to slow down and support our own needs than it does to frantically ask someone else to do for us what we already have the power to do for ourselves. And once we’ve taken a break, if we still feel like we need help, then we can seek it out from a place of more authenticity and awareness.
3. I flip all the way to the other side, wipe my slate clean, and do nothing I don’t absolutely have to do until I feel better.True, I get more time with my family and I’m rested because I’m in bed early every night. But my writing and other passions take a hit.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD: Find some balance! We’re not meant to be teeter-totters! When we swing from one extreme to the other, we’re really not solving the true problem, which goes back to slowing down and trusting our inner guidance. And all our energy is used up on the swinging. We can slow down, but we don’t have to stop completely (because it takes a lot more energy to start up again). We can sit right smack in the middle of that teeter totter, open up, and let our inner guidance lead us in the right direction (and then have the courage to follow it, because it otherwise, what’s the point?).
Long story short, I don’t know yet what all these animals mean for me. Maybe it’s just springtime and I’m really observant. Or maybe it’s the next step on my personal journey. It’s not clear to me yet. And that’s okay. What I DO know is that doing nothing or overthinking is not going to bring me the answers I seek.
And maybe that’s really the lesson anyway.

As Awakening Angels, we are unlike any others. We feel deeper, see deeper, and experience life deeper than most. We feel the weight of the world on our shoulders, and because of that, we’ve lived most of our lives serving the needs of those around us, often neglecting our own needs in the process.
And still, that small voice inside, the one that reminds us that we have a purpose, never leaves our side, no matter how overwhelmed or out of sorts we get, no matter how much we ignore it.
I know, because I’ve been where you are.
I lost my mom when I was 27, after eight years of illness, and I never really took the time to grieve or heal from that great loss. I simply went on with life. I got married, had children, and completely ignored my own self care for many years. As a result, I struggled with chronic stress and illness which left me nearly debilitated in my 30s. At my lowest point, I thought that struggle and overwhelm was my fate, that I was destined to simply survive whatever the world threw at me.
But in those quiet moments, when I was truly honest with myself, I knew deep down that this wasn’t the life I was supposed to live. That I was here to do more than struggle. And I wanted so badly to feel better that I could no longer accept my “fate”. So, I spent the last several years cultivating tools to help me heal from my past, balance my life, and connect with my inner guidance: my soul, my higher self, and most especially my angels.
Last year, at the urging of my angels, I finally published my first book, The Angel Inside: Inspiration to Connect with Your Inner Guidance. Ironically, I fought the guidance I was receiving, doing everything I could to avoid writing this book. However, angels can be persistent; they know when something is needed in this world. And they know who needs to bring it to life.
What I would have given during my own time of awakening and healing to have had a group of heart-centered, awakening women to help support and inspire me, to help me not feel so alone, to ensure me I wasn’t actually crazy, to hold my hand as I followed my path. To hold space for me to grow in my spiritual awareness, help me identify areas which need healing and support and elevate my self-care practices, support me to explore the voice pushing me into something new to confront the blocks which seemed to hold me back.
At the urging of my angels, I now offer to you what I didn’t have then: Support. Inspiration. Compassion. Healing. Empowerment. Growth. Connection.
“When women come together and make a commitment to each other to be in a circle with a spiritual center, they are creating a vessel of healing and transformation for themselves, and vehicle for change in their world.”
~Jean Shinoda Bolen
Women have gathered in circles for centuries to connect, grow, develop, and heal. The power of circles is that we grow not only from our own work, but from bearing witness and holding space for the work of others. In circles, we are all equal. Our resources are multiplied, our support magnified.
In these times of unrest across the globe, the power of women coming together for spiritual development, self care, healing, and connection to inner guidance cannot be understated. The world desperately needs healing and the best way to go about this is for women to first work on themselves, creating a global ripple effect of awakening, fierce compassion, and holistic service.
Women participating in the Awakening Angels Circle will work together to explore powerful topics such as:
- Safety, Security, and Trust
- Worthiness and Openness to Change
- Self-Care and Self-Compassion
- Speaking and Living Your Truth
- Seeing New Ways to Move Forward
- Connection to Self and Spirit
For more details on each of these topics, visit A Spirit Led Life.

- Chakra Balancing and Connection (distance). I will assess and clear each one of your chakras, as well as your energy field. I’ll take notes and share any intuitive feedback I may receive to support your growth and healing.
Questions? Ready to join?
Due to the nature of spiritual development, it is imperative that the circle remain small and that all members are committed to their ongoing own growth and to supporting the growth of others. For that reason, I speak with each potential member prior to joining the group, to ensure it is a good fit for everyone with respect to personalities, goals, interests, etc. If you would like to inquire more about the circle, click the link below!
Please note that this currently this is a local offering (Louisville, KY area). I plan to make this a virtual offering in the near future. Stay tuned!
Ashley Barnes stopped to talk with me about her blog, her writing and A Spirit Led Life.org as well as her blog A Spirit Led Life here on WordPress where she supports and inspires women to heal body, mind, and spirit, develop a connection to their inner guidance, and lead a more Spirit Led Life. Throughout our lives, we make a lot of choices. Some work out, some don’t. Over time, as we look back and reflect, we often see our mistakes as some kind of internal flaw, an obvious defect that, had it been corrected much earlier, would have changed the course of our lives. This thinking leads to a deep lack of trust – in people, in situations, and most especially in ourselves.
When we feel we can’t be trusted to make the best decisions for our own lives, it jars our belief in ourselves as a person. We feel unworthy and in need of someone or something outside of us to help guide and direct us. We start to give up our power, our direction, our belief that we can take care of ourselves in the best way.
Sometimes, this trust is broken by an external event. Our children leave home and need us less, leaving us feeling empty and unsure of what to do next. Our spouse makes the decision to move on without us. We face a traumatic loss that causes us to question everything. No matter our great choices, life is now different and our trust in the patterns and expectations of life are shattered.
Grief, anger, fear, shame, and sadness are all emotional results of loss of trust. When we lose trust in ourselves, we grieve this loss. We carry a sadness that can be masked and avoided by busyness yet still lurks below the surface. We feel shame that we made these choices or allowed these things to happen to us, even when we didn’t actually have that kind of control. We get angry at the unfairness of it all, yet retreat back to our corners in fear that one more wrong choice will create more pain.
I remember the day someone told me I carried a great sadness. I was shocked. I didn’t feel sad. What did I even have to be sad about? Then I started observing myself more closely, especially in the quiet times when I was alone. I recall sitting in my car one morning during my commute and feeling the heavy weight of sadness like someone had draped a wet blanket over me. It was both nauseating and suffocating.
Had I always been this sad? How could I have avoided feeling this for so long?
It wasn’t until I started to allow more stillness into my life and to peel back the layers of blame for choices that didn’t turn out like I’d hope – so many not even my own – that I started to release the sadness, grief, anger, shame, and fear.
In my personal work and work with others, I’ve realized that much of our avoidance of issues comes from overthinking to the point that we drown out our inner guidance. Our inner guidance tells us that we ARE worthy, we ARE to be trusted, we DO make good choices for ourselves, and we CAN’T control other people or take the blame for their choices, even if they affect us. Yet, to get to that place, we have to sit through the voices the yell the opposite. We have to be still long enough to tell those voices to be quiet, so we can hear the real truth within. And it’s difficult. One of the most difficult things we will ever do is to confront those voices that steer us away from our inner guidance and truth. It’s also one of the most uplifting and healing.
I offer you a few techniques that have helped me and other women who’ve reached that place where they’re ready for radical change. That place where the risk of staying put and accepting the lack of trust is no longer worth the painful side effects. That point in time where something inside stirs and whispers, “enough is enough.”
- Notice how you feel in your body – We often get stuck in that place of thinking too much and not allowing ourselves to be—be quiet, be sad, be grief-stricken, be us. There are some recognizable signs that we’re in that place. We feel stress, worry, and doubt. We don’t know how to move forward or make a decision. We feel “buzzy” or heavy energy around our heads, heart, and/or belly. When we recognize these are signs of being stuck, of now allowing trust in our inner guidance, we can find a safe, quiet place to be still and work through it.
- Be still and allow– As much as the idea of getting really quiet with your own thoughts may sound frightening, it’s a necessary step. You have to allow yourself the space to get past all the loud thoughts so you can get to the quiet ones. This may take time, if you’re not used to it. Start with just a few minutes a few days a week and build up. You didn’t reach this place overnight; you don’t have to unravel it overnight either.
- Drop down – When we’re overthinking, we’re in our heads. That’s why we feel lots of energy there. However, inner guidance comes from the heart or the gut. When you want guidance but can’t seem to quiet your thoughts, focus your attention on your heart space. Imagine a beautiful, healing pink bubble of light situated right in front of your heart, glowing with peace and calm. Keep focusing on the bubble until your breathing slows naturally and your racing thoughts begin to clear. Return to the bubble as often as necessary.
If you’re at a point in your life where you’re feeling the weight of sadness, grief, anger, shame, or fear affecting you and you’re ready to do something about it, I stand with you on your journey, and I summon for you the collective energy of all the women before you who have taken this step.
Trust that you are worthy. Trust that you are enough. Trust that the healing can begin. And if you need one-on-one support, feel free to reach out to me.
Love and light,
